9 Easy Ways to Improve Your Gut Health

Here is something most people do not expect to hear: a lot of what you experience in daily life, your energy levels, your mood, how clearly you think, how well you sleep, and even how often you get sick, may have as much to do with your gut as anything else.

That sounds like an overstatement. It is not.

The gut microbiome is a community of trillions of microorganisms living in your digestive tract, and over the last decade, research has made it increasingly clear that this microbial ecosystem is one of the most influential systems in the human body. (1) It helps regulate immune function. It communicates with the brain through what researchers call the gut-brain axis. It shapes your inflammatory response. And when its balance is disrupted, the effects tend to show up in ways that feel completely unrelated to digestion: persistent fatigue, brain fog, stubborn bloating, mood shifts, and a general sense of being off that is hard to explain.

Most people who end up here have already tried something. A probiotic that did not do much. A cleanse that helped temporarily. Cutting out certain foods without getting lasting relief. If that sounds familiar, it is worth understanding why gut health is more complex than “just take a probiotic” and what actually moves the needle.

Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, miso, and plain yogurt contain live beneficial bacteria that may help diversify your gut microbiome. A 2021 clinical trial found that a high-fermented food diet increased microbiome diversity and correlated with decreases in markers of inflammation. (4)

Two caveats worth knowing: pasteurized versions of fermented foods contain few if any live cultures, since the heat kills bacteria. And most commercial yogurts contain so much added sugar that the benefit from the cultures is largely offset. If you want yogurt to count, go plain and full-fat. It does not have to be exciting to be useful.

Research suggests that inadequate and irregular sleep can negatively affect the composition of the gut microbiome, and the relationship appears to run in both directions.
