In September 1989, Boris Yeltsin walked into a Randall’s supermarket in Clear Lake, Texas, and stood in the aisles for a while, just looking. He was struck by the produce section, the fresh fish counter, the free cheese samples. By some accounts, it was the frozen pudding pops that really got to him.
He reportedly stayed quiet for a while afterward. Two years later, he left the Communist Party for good, though plenty of other forces were at play in that decision. In his memoir, he wrote that seeing shelves “crammed with hundreds, thousands of cans, cartons and goods of every possible sort” left him feeling sick with despair for the Soviet people back home.
It’s a strange little footnote in Cold War history, but it says something true: not many places on Earth offer quite this much choice.

- Growth Hormone In Dairy Cows
Recombinant bovine somatotropin, often shortened to rBST or rBGH, is a synthetic hormone injected into dairy cows to increase milk production. Although its use has declined substantially over the past two decades, it is still used on some US dairy farms.
The European Union and Canada formally prohibit its use, largely over animal welfare concerns like higher rates of mastitis and lameness in treated cows. It’s also not approved for use in several other developed countries. A review of the scientific literature, including an international food safety assessment, found modestly higher levels of a hormone called IGF-1 in milk from treated cows, though IGF-1 occurs naturally in all milk regardless, and that same international assessment concluded the increase represents negligible risk to consumers. Whether that modest difference translates into meaningful risk for people who drink the milk is still debated in parts of the research literature, and some studies have raised concern about a possible link between elevated IGF-1 and certain cancers. Professional health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, describe the overall evidence for human harm as inconclusive.
- Ractopamine-Fed Meat
Ractopamine is a growth drug used in US pork production, and it also shows up in cattle and turkey feed. It helps animals build lean muscle on less feed, which is good for producer margins.
Ractopamine is banned or restricted in many countries, including throughout the European Union, China, and Russia. - Titanium Dioxide In Candy And Coatings
Titanium dioxide, listed as TiO2 or E171, is what gives some candy, gum, and frosting that bright, opaque white look. It has no flavor and no nutritional purpose. It’s purely cosmetic.
In 2021, European food safety regulators reviewed the additive and concluded that a concern for genotoxicity, meaning potential damage to genetic material, could not be ruled out, which led the EU to ban it from food products the following year. The US has not followed suit. The FDA is reviewing a 2023 citizen petition asking it to repeal the additive’s approval, and as of this writing, that review remains open.

- Artificial Food Dyes
Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and a handful of other synthetic dyes show up in everything from cereal to sports drinks to macaroni and cheese.
A comprehensive review of both human and animal research found a consistent association between exposure to synthetic food dyes and adverse behavioral outcomes in children, and noted that current federal safety thresholds are based on decades-old studies never designed to catch these effects. Countries in the EU already require warning labels on foods containing these dyes. In the US, the shift away from them is underway but gradual, and many products on shelves today still contain them.
- Azodicarbonamide In Bread
Azodicarbonamide is a dough conditioner and flour treatment agent used in a lot of commercially produced American bread, rolls, and baked goods, valued for the strength and consistency it adds to dough. It’s also, somewhat famously, used to manufacture foam products like yoga mats.
The European Union removed it as a food additive after concluding that uncertainties surrounding its breakdown products, including a byproduct called semicarbazide formed during baking, could not be adequately resolved. Australia also does not permit its use as a food additive. It’s also been linked in occupational settings to respiratory irritation. The US still permits it at regulated levels, though public pressure has pushed several major chains to drop it from their bread over the past decade.
