7 Essential Heart Healthy Habits

Heart disease has held the same uncomfortable title for decades: the leading cause of death in the United States. It affects men and women, and it touches nearly every community across the country. According to the CDC, someone in the U.S. dies from cardiovascular disease roughly every 34 seconds, and in 2023 cardiovascular disease accounted for about 1 in every 3 deaths nationwide (1).

Numbers like that can feel heavy. But heart health isn’t just something that happens to you. A lot of it comes down to daily choices, the kind that are easy to overlook because they seem too small to matter.

This article walks through seven of those choices. None of them require a total lifestyle overhaul. Most of them are things you can start today.

Are You at Risk for Heart Disease?

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are three of the biggest risk factors for heart disease, and the CDC notes that several other conditions and habits can raise your risk as well, including diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use (1).

For many people, these risk factors build quietly over years. That’s one reason heart health deserves ongoing attention rather than a single checkup once a year.

The good news is that most of the habits linked to a healthier heart are also habits that improve how you feel day to day, not just numbers on a lab report.

Try Keeping a Gratitude Journal 

This one tends to surprise people. Gratitude sounds more like a mindset than a heart health strategy, but researchers have actually studied it in cardiac patients.

In a study led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, 70 patients with Stage B heart failure, meaning they already had heart damage from a previous heart attack or years of high blood pressure, were split into two groups (2). One group kept a gratitude journal for eight weeks, writing about the people, places, and things they were thankful for. The other group received usual care without journaling.

By the end of the study, the journaling group showed reduced levels of inflammatory biomarkers linked to heart failure progression, along with improved heart rate variability, a marker connected to how well the nervous system regulates heart function (2). A broader review of gratitude research in cardiovascular patients found similar patterns across multiple studies, including associations with better cardiovascular biomarkers and healthier behavior adherence (3).

While more research is needed, these findings suggest gratitude practices may support overall cardiovascular wellness. A five-minute journaling habit costs nothing and carries essentially no downside, which makes it an easy one to try.

Enjoy Your Coffee, in Moderation 

If mornings without coffee feel unthinkable, there’s some reassuring research here.

A large study out of Brazil’s ELSA-Brasil cohort, which included more than 4,400 adults, found that people who drank more than three cups of coffee a day had lower odds of subclinical coronary artery calcification, but mainly among people who had never smoked (4).

It’s worth being upfront that the evidence on coffee and heart health is mixed. Other large studies, including work from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, have not found a significant link between regular coffee intake and coronary artery calcium progression (5). What this generally tells us is that moderate coffee consumption appears to be neutral to potentially favorable for most people, rather than something to fear.

If you already enjoy your coffee, there’s little reason to give it up on heart health grounds alone. If caffeine affects your sleep or blood pressure, that’s a more personal conversation to have with your doctor.

Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Magnesium 

Magnesium plays a role in nearly every system in the body, and the heart depends on it more than most people realize. It helps regulate heart rhythm, supports blood vessel relaxation, and plays a part in keeping blood pressure in a healthy range.

Research from the long-running Framingham Heart Study found that adults with the lowest blood magnesium levels had a meaningfully higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, compared to those with higher magnesium levels, even after accounting for other risk factors (6). A more recent meta-analysis of controlled trials found that magnesium supplementation was associated with measurable reductions in systolic blood pressure, particularly with consistent use over several months (7).

Magnesium-rich foods include leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, and whole grains. For a lot of adults, especially those with busy schedules or limited variety in their diet, getting a consistent amount from food alone can be a challenge.

A Little Dark Chocolate Can Fit In

The key word is moderate. A square or two of dark chocolate with a high cocoa percentage, rather than a whole bar, is where most of the research points.

Round Out Your Omega-3 Intake 

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseed, have long been studied for their role in heart health.

According to the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements, a large 2020 Cochrane review of 86 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 163,000 participants found that omega-3 supplementation reduced triglyceride levels by about 15% and was associated with modestly lower rates of cardiovascular mortality and coronary heart disease events (9). The same review noted that omega-3s did not show a clear effect on stroke or arrhythmia risk, so it’s not a cure-all, but the triglyceride and coronary benefit is fairly well established.

Rather than fixating on fish alone, which comes with its own considerations around mercury in certain species, it’s worth building a broader base of omega-3 sources into your week, including plant-based options like walnuts and ground flaxseed.

Take Liver Health Seriously

This connection surprises a lot of people, but it’s one of the more consistent findings in recent cardiovascular research: liver health and heart health are closely linked.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where fat builds up in the liver for reasons unrelated to alcohol, is increasingly recognized as an independent cardiovascular risk factor. A comprehensive review on the liver-heart connection found that a meta-analysis of six studies involving nearly 26,000 adults showed people with fatty liver disease had a clinical cardiovascular event rate of 14.9%, compared to 6.3% in those without it (10). Researchers note that this relationship holds even after accounting for more traditional risk factors like smoking, blood pressure, and diabetes (10).

Supporting liver health through diet, movement, and limiting added sugars and processed foods isn’t just about digestion. It appears to be genuinely relevant to protecting your heart over the long run.

Since magnesium also plays a supporting role in healthy blood pressure and blood vessel function, some people pair heart-supportive habits like these with a magnesium support option as part of the same daily routine.

Keep Moving 

This one isn’t new information, but it remains one of the most reliable habits for heart health.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, which breaks down to about 30 minutes a day, five days a week (1). That doesn’t have to mean a gym membership or a running habit. Walking, gardening, taking the stairs, or doing housework at a brisker pace all count.

If 30 minutes feels like a lot right now, shorter movement throughout the day still adds up. The goal is consistency over intensity, especially when you’re building a new habit.

Small Habits, Real Impact

None of these seven habits are dramatic on their own. That’s actually the point. Heart health tends to respond less to occasional big efforts and more to the small things repeated often: a grateful moment jotted down, a handful of walnuts, a short walk after dinner.

Some weeks will go better than others, and that’s normal. What research consistently shows is that consistency over time, not perfection, is what tends to move the needle.
