If you’ve spent any time searching for detox advice online, you’ve probably seen everything from three-day juice cleanses to elaborate supplement regimens. Some of it is genuinely useful. A lot of it is not.
The real story is less dramatic and more actionable. Your body already has a built-in detoxification system centered on your liver, kidneys, skin, and digestive tract. The question isn’t whether your body detoxes. It does. The question is whether it’s getting the support it needs to do that job well.
When it isn’t, the effects can show up in ways that feel oddly familiar: sluggish energy, stubborn weight, bloating, brain fog. None of this means you need a celebrity juice cleanse. It means your body may benefit from smarter, more consistent habits.
Here’s a practical look at what the research actually supports.
What “Detox” Actually Means
The term gets overused, but the biology behind it is real.
Your liver is your body’s primary detoxification organ. Every day, it processes blood from your digestive tract, breaks down metabolic waste, and helps prepare compounds for elimination through bile or urine. According to Cleveland Clinic, one of the liver’s most important jobs is helping remove toxins and waste products from the bloodstream. (1)
The liver works in two main phases. In Phase I, enzymes break toxins down into intermediate compounds. In Phase II, those compounds are converted into water-soluble forms the body can excrete. (2) Both phases depend on specific nutrients to function properly.
Certain factors can increase the workload placed on the liver. (3) A 2024 meta-analysis reviewing 14 randomized controlled trials confirmed that intermittent fasting significantly reduced two key liver enzyme markers, ALT and AST, that are commonly elevated when the liver is under stress. During fasting periods, the body shifts its energy metabolism and begins relying more heavily on stored fat for fuel. The digestive system also gets a natural break from constant food processing.
Common approaches include:
- 16:8 (eating within an 8-hour window, fasting for 16 hours)
- 5:2 (eating normally five days per week, significantly reducing calories on two non-consecutive days)
- 12:12 (a more approachable starting point for beginners)
For many people, a 12- or 14-hour overnight fast is a reasonable starting point. It doesn’t require skipping meals dramatically. Finishing dinner by 7 p.m. and having breakfast at 7 or 8 a.m. is enough to get started.

Consider Targeted Botanical Support
Certain plant-based compounds have been studied specifically for their liver-supportive properties, and two in particular have a meaningful body of research behind them.
Milk thistle (silymarin) is one of the most researched botanicals in this space. A 2023 systematic review examining 29 randomized controlled trials found that silymarin supplementation was associated with reductions in liver enzyme levels across a range of patient populations. (5) Researchers highlighted its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties as likely contributing factors.
Turmeric (curcumin) has also been studied for its effects on liver function. A 2023 meta-analysis of 31 randomized controlled trials found that curcumin supplementation was associated with significant reductions in ALT and AST levels, two common markers of liver inflammation. (6) The authors noted that while statistically significant, clinical effectiveness will vary by individual, and much of the research has focused on people with existing fatty liver disease rather than the general population.
It’s worth knowing where the evidence is stronger and where it’s still developing. For both compounds, the research is promising, but results are not guaranteed for everyone.

A lot of people notice real improvements within a few weeks of making these kinds of changes, including less bloating, more consistent energy, and gradual weight loss that feels different from the quick water-weight shifts that come with crash diets.
That said, results vary. If you’re carrying significant extra weight, or if your liver function is already a concern, progress may be slower and working with a healthcare provider makes sense. The habits described here are supportive lifestyle choices, not medical treatments.
The goal is a baseline where your liver has what it needs, your digestive system isn’t under constant pressure, and your body can process and eliminate waste more efficiently over time. For most people, that’s where lasting change actually happens.
